BREAKING: AHSAA announces site rotation modifications for football title games.
Birmingham, Alabama (WIAT) — For the first time in 15 years, Alabama’s high school football championships will not be hosted at Bryant-Denny Stadium or Jordan-Hare Field.
The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) stated on Wednesday that the two main stadiums will no longer be used to host its annual Super 7 High School Football Championship.
Since 2009, the championships have rotated between stadiums and towns. Legion Field formerly hosted the championship games from 1996 until 2008.
AHSAA officials stated that the decision was ‘essential’ due to the expanded College Football Playoff plan. The new arrangement would force both the University of Alabama and Auburn University to host postseason games that clashed with the Super 7.
“We are grateful to the cities of Tuscaloosa, Auburn and Opelika, Auburn University, the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports and Auburn-Opelika Tourism for joining together to host our Super 7 since the rotation began in 2009,” Alvin Briggs, the executive director of the AHSAA,
“The experiences and memories provided to our member schools, teams, students, and communities have been invaluable. We recognize, however, that conflicts will be unavoidable in the future due to the increased CFA playoff structure and format,” Briggs stated.
Birmingham’s Protective Stadium will stay in the Super 7 rotation after hosting the 2024 event. According to Briggs, the organization is also looking into other rotation options.
