Following the recent departure of Will Vaulks, another Sheffield Wednesday player is expected to leave the team as a free agent this summer.
Will Vaulks has officially joined Oxford United, a rival team in the Championship, after leaving Sheffield Wednesday.
After playing with Sheffield Wednesday for two seasons, the Welshman was voted Player of the Season for the 2023–2024 season.
He now joins the likes of George Byers, who became a free agent, and Lee Gregory and Reece James, who have already signed contracts with new teams this summer.
According to the club’s retained list, keeper Cameron Dawson was given a new contract, but it appears he will explore first-team opportunities elsewhere. Dawson is also expected to leave Sheffield Wednesday.
Di’Shon Bernard’s future is also very uncertain because his contract expires this summer.
After an impressive 2023–24 season, he was naturally granted new terms. However, he is now abroad on international service with Jamaica, who are competing in the Copa America this summer.
Another important player with a contract expiration is Josh Windass, who is certain to become a free agent and depart Sheffield Wednesday.
According to a fresh report from Football Insider, Windass and Sheffield Wednesday are unable to come to an agreement on terms for a new contract.
The 30-year-old Windass led the Owls to safety with six goals in the Championship the previous season, including three in each of the final three games on Wednesday.
There were rumours that Windass and the team were getting close to settling on a new contract. Football Insider, however, currently claims otherwise.
Their report says that Windass has ‘has rejected a final contract offer’ from the club and will leave as a free agent this summer, with Coventry City and Hull City currently leading the race for his signature.
Windass initially joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan in 2020, making his stay permanent the same year.
He’s scored 40 goals and assisted 17 more in 135 total appearances for the Owls, memorably scoring the only goal in the League One play-off final victory over Barnsley in 2024.
