Despite having a dream season in many aspects, the Philadelphia Phillies have recently suffered a great deal of injury. But it seems like the Phillies are getting closer to being whole again following a string of roster cuts.
The Phillies needed good injury news after standout catcher J.T. Realmuto was sidelined earlier in the week due to a knee ailment. That Thursday, they understood.
According to a tweet from the team’s official account, outfielder Brandon Marsh will begin a rehab assignment Thursday for the Double-A Reading Fightin Phils. One of the true glue guys on the Phillies’ roster, Marsh is sure to reinvigorate his teammates when he can return to play.
It will be the first game action for Marsh since June 2, when he strained his right hamstring running the bases against the St. Louis Cardinals. A timetable has not yet been announced for Marsh’s return to the big-league club.
Marsh has been vital to the Phillies offense this season, posting a .770 OPS/120 OPS+ in 52 games. He has played 40 games in left field, 10 in center, one in right, and one as a pinch-hitter.
Despite having a solid offensive game overall, Marsh’s on-base percentage (OPS) against right-handed pitchers is.884, yet it is only.390 against lefties.
Based on Marsh’s lopsided splits, beat writer Matt Gelb of The Athletic conjectured on Wednesday that the Phillies might be looking for a platoon bat to partner with him in left field for the rest of the season. To see how well Marsh handles left-handed pitching the rest of the season, it will be imperative to get him back into the fold.
