Analyst makes shocking prediction regarding Steelers QBs
The Pittsburgh Steelers have an opportunity to make NFL history.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have the skill and, perhaps, the opportunity to defy the NFL norm, setting a new standard that will be noted in league history for generations to come. All it will take is solid quarterback play from not one, but two of their new starters.
Sports Illustrated’s Connor Orr recently joined on the MMQB podcast, where he discussed some of the wild predictions for the coming season. On the list are the Steelers’ quarterbacks, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. But Orr does not see this club as a one-quarterback system, and he believes they can break the mold in 2024.
“Consider third-and-six from the opposition’s 45-yard line. “With Russell Wilson in the shotgun and Justin Fields lined up like a running back next to him, you can do zone-read action,” Orr said. “Consider how many more people in that intermediate area need to be aware, focused, and apprehensive about what’s happening. Is Justin Fields going to get the ball and run? Justin Fields is back, therefore I need to devote more people to coverage; there are more individuals back.”
Orr believes the Steelers have the quarterbacks in place to become the NFL’s first successful two-quarterback club in 2024. That would necessitate Wilson and Fields working together, most likely with Wilson starting and Fields coming off the bench. Both would be played to their strengths, which meant Fields’ opportunities would come when his athleticism was needed – but not at the expense of his arm.
“I can’t believe we aren’t doing this yet. I cannot believe we are not there. “I think once teams get there, it just makes perfect sense,” Orr said.
The Steelers are expected to see Fields as their future starting after the 2024 season, but Wilson is now the front-runner in the quarterback duel. So, if they want to obtain some game video of Fields before a potential extension, putting him on the field during games will help them make a decision.
Right now, it’s unclear whether the Steelers are mulling a two-quarterback offense. General manager Omar Khan mentioned that new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith was working on something “special” for the two of them, but until the season begins, we can only infer that he was referring to Fields’ packages.
