South Carolina Gamecocks’ head coach Lamont Paris finally opens up regarding the team’s point guard battle.
The South Carolina Gamecocks are coming off a successful season under head coach Lamont Paris. The squad completed 26-8 overall, with a conference record of 13-5. They also competed in March Madness for the first time since 2017. The focus now switches to the upcoming season, and Paris sat down to examine the team’s trajectory in depth.
One of the numerous topics he highlighted was the point guard competition that is taking on this offseason. The departure of Meechie Johnson and his return to Ohio State created numerous openings at guard for the Gamecocks, and some guys are already looking to capitalize on them. This is what Paris had to say.
“Jacobi [Wright] has played a significant role in our efforts and is well-versed in the technology. He’s at ease with what we do and the expectations. He’s a man in the mix. Jamarii Thomas was brought in with the aim of competing for the position. Ugusuk has participated in the program, and Austin Herro is another candidate worth considering. We put him on a scholarship, and he deserved it. He’s a scholarship student currently.”
Paris also said that the team has a lot of expertise and years under its belt, which is how he aims to build his lineups in the future, with some youth thrown throughout. The Gamecocks have a lot of veteran players to pick from, and Paris should be able to put together another good team for the program this season. His ability to cite more than one or two names during a position contest exemplifies this.
