Browns place RB Nick Chubb on the PUP list while he recovers from knee surgery.
Nick Chubb, the Cleveland Browns’ star running back, was placed on the physically unable to perform list Wednesday as he continues to heal from a season-ending left knee injury that required two operations.
The team made the expected move with Chubb, a four-time Pro Bowler, one day before training camp began in West Virginia.
While Chubb was the most prominent name on the PUP list, he was not alone. Starting offensive tackles Jack Conklin and Jedrick Wills Jr., as well as defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson, were also placed there due to knee injuries.
Conklin sustained a season-ending injury in the 2023 opener.
A week later, Chubb suffered a horrific injury on a carry near the goal line against Pittsburgh, bringing his season to an end. The 28-year-old suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and other injuries to the same knee he hurt in college while playing for Georgia.
Not surprisingly, Chubb has worked hard to get back in shape, as evidenced by a viral video of him squatting almost 600 pounds.
Chubb talked to media for the first time since his injury in June, and he voiced confidence that he will return as good as ever.
It’s unclear when Chubb will be ready to play, but the Browns believe he’ll return at some time this season. Chubb has run for 6,511 yards and 48 touchdowns in his five-plus seasons with Cleveland.
The team modified Chubb’s deal in April. He was entering the final year of a three-year, $36.6 million contract inked in 2021. He agreed to take a wage decrease but can recoup it through incentives.
The Browns have also added cornerback Greg Newsome II (hamstring) and running back Nyheim Hines (knee) to the active/non-football injury list. All injured players are still on the roster and can return to the field whenever they pass a physical.
