Everything you need to know about the Steelers’ first two weeks of training camp: standouts, injuries, and more.
The Steelers’ preseason opener is less than a week away. Ahead of it, the most football-hungry among us have been going over the numerous meticulously produced training camp reports compiled by the beat reporters and bloggers in attendance. They’re an incredible resource, but let’s face it: there’s a lot of data to handle.
Before the Texans head to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers on August 9, here’s everything you need to know about their first two weeks of training camp, broken down by positional group:
Quarterbacks
Currently on roster: Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Kyle Allen, John Rhys Plumlee
Perhaps the greatest news of training camp has been assumed starting quarterback Russell Wilson’s calf injury, which he suffered while pushing a sled prior to camp. He’s steadily making his way back, but he has yet to completely participate. Nonetheless, he and the Steelers do not appear concerned, with Wilson indicating that he would “definitely” be able to play if there was a game. He’s allegedly looked good in the few reps he’s had, and he finally threw in 11-on-11 on August 4.
Didn’t get a good angle/view spot tonight but I got a few.

Wilson’s injury has allowed Justin Fields to take the majority of snaps as the starting quarterback. Opinions have varied, but most have stated that Fields is a highlight reel machine who needs to work on the small details to live up to his enormous potential. Short accuracy and decision-making remain issues, but his deep ball and rushing abilities are exceptional. He has slowly improved throughout camp, culminating in an electrifying Friday Night Lights performance.

Another strong practice. Stacking good days. #Steelers

In sum, while he is improving, Fields remains who he was in Chicago, for better or worse.
Fans will be pleased to learn that he has also formed a solid bond with star wideout George Pickens.
As of now, Wilson is and should be the overwhelming favorite to start Week 1, but Fields is gradually winning over Steelers media members. Nonetheless, Pittsburgh’s quarterback situation now has more concerns than answers.
As for the other two quarterbacks on the roster, Kyle Allen has quietly had a solid camp (though he’s cooled off recently), so Steelers fans should be pleased with their QB3. Plumlee has seen some action as a returner, which is something to keep an eye on during the preseason.
Running backs/fullbacks
Currently on roster: RB Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren, Aaron Shampklin, Jonathan Ward, Daijun Edwards, La’Mical Perine, Cordarrelle Patterson (NFI); FB Jack Colletto
Despite his initial disappointment that the Steelers declined his fifth-year option, Harris has apparently performed well in camp. Jaylen Warren has equally impressed, maintaining the same high-effort playing style that earned him a roster place with the Steelers as a UDFA in 2022.
#Steelers HC Mike Tomlin on Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren:
“I can’t say enough about those top two backs… Those two, in particular, don’t run FROM the fight, they run TO the fight. I respect it.” pic.twitter.com/hOIEYqo6NT

Friday’s “backs on backers” was allegedly a must-see event.
The top two RBs showed out on #Steelers backs on backers:
Najee Harris PANCAKED Patrick Queen and stood over top of him after the block.
Queen calls for his rematch, Harris stone’s him and talks in his face.
Jaylen Warren got beat by Elandon Roberts, who taunted Warren…
— Christopher Carter (@CarterCritiques) August 3, 2024
Other backs on the roster include Cordarrelle Patterson, who began camp on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list due to a hamstring injury. It is uncertain when he will return, but he has been able to run throughout practice and appears to be on the mend.
Fullback Jack Colletto has progressed from a camp sleeper to a player with a legitimate shot at a roster berth, impressing over multiple days and earning starting experience.

Aaron Shampklin has allegedly impressed in training camp, but he will face a tough battle to make the final 53. However, he has stood out among a number of practice squad-eligible names.
Wide receivers
Currently on roster: George Pickens, Van Jefferson, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, Scotty Miller, Quez Watkins, Duece Watts, Jaray Jenkins, Dez Fitzpatrick, Jacob Copeland, Tarik Black
George Pickens remains a superstar in training camp, with highlight catches appearing online every day.

In less favorable news, third-round rookie receiver Roman Wilson, who many expect to play WR2 this season, suffered a sprained ankle on July 30 and may miss the remainder of the summer. However, as of Sunday, he has already removed his walking boot, implying an early comeback.
Tight ends
Darnell Washington is enjoying another excellent camp. MyCole Pruitt has also stood out. Connor Heyward continues to be a sneaky good receiver with fullback versatility. Unfortunately, Rodney Williams suffered a shoulder injury but returned to pads on July 31, albeit he did not participate in the Steelers’ most recent session.
Pittsburgh will have a difficult time determining who to keep at tight end, but it appears to be a good problem. At the very least, Arthur Smith stated that he wants “all of them” involved in this season.
Offensive line
Currently on roster: Isaac Seumalo, James Daniels, Zach Frazier, Nate Herbig, Dan Moore Jr., Broderick Jones, Troy Fautanu, Mason McCormick, Spencer Anderson, Dylan Cook, Anderson Hardy, Devery Hamilton, Tyler Beach, Ryan McCollum, Joey Fisher
Let’s start with the easy part: Guards James Daniels and Isaac Seumalo haven’t been in training camp news much outside of the latter’s scheduled rest days. They’re both quality, veteran players who don’t bring much risk entering the new season. There are plenty of big stories with the more unproven names populating the rest of the O-line depth chart. Namely, at tackle.
Dan Moore Jr. remains the team’s starting left tackle, while 2023 first-round pick Broderick Jones and rookie Troy Fautanu have been sharing snaps on the right. The good news is that Fautanu has impressed. The bad news is that Jones has spent hardly any time on the left, the spot most expected him to transition to in 2024. It is worth noting that Jones has apparently been banged up recently, but there’s reason to wonder if he has disappointed in his development this offseason or has ended up in the Steelers’ doghouse through some other means. Still, Jones is the team’s current starter on the right side.
#Steelers are in pads, as expected. Broderick Jones has a big old elbow brace on. His reps have been limited since he got banged up earlier this week. pic.twitter.com/izf98yCbTK

2nd down) Highsmith sack
3rd down) Highsmith sackAll off the right side (LT). Moore on all 3.#Steelers

At center, Nate Herbig seems to be in a clear lead over Zach Frazier as to who starts Week 1. Herbig has drawn solid reviews thus far. So has Frazier, but some have noted that he’s struggling with power rushes like he did at times in college. It’s no cause for panic, as it’s still very early in the season, and the Steelers seem set on easing the rookies into the starting lineup.
As of now, the Steelers’ starting O-line looks to consistently be Moore, Seumalo, Herbig, Daniels, and Jones from left to right.
Some other nuggets include Spencer Anderson looking like a favorite at second-team guard, and Mason McCormick snapping at center occasionally. Dylan Cook continues to be a popular name among Steelers writers.
The O-line has been very protective of their quarterback, resulting in a few scuffles over the past few practices.
As a side note, Arthur Smith has been making offensive linemen—well, everyone—who commit pre-snap penalties run a lap as a punishment. This year’s Steelers camp appears to place a greater focus on accountability.
Defensive line
Currently on roster: Cam Heyward, Larry Ogunjobi, Keeanu Benton, DeMarvin Leal, Montravius Adams, Breiden Fehoko, Jacob Slade, Willington Previlon, Isaiahh Loudermilk, Logan Lee, Dean Lowry (PUP)
Despite wanting a new contract, Cam Heyward has been showing up to camp and there doesn’t seem to be any major underlying drama. Larry Ogunjobi has said he’s finally feeling healthy after a couple injury-plagued seasons in Pittsburgh. He’s also shown up full of wisdom. Keeanu Benton has had a mildly quiet camp ahead of what needs to be a big second year for the Wisconsin product. Still, he’s shown flashes.
DeMarvin Leal has been one of the bigger stories of camp, playing dominantly in a make or break season for the young defender. He’s looked extremely explosive, with the team still rotating him at both outside linebacker and defensive line. If his hot streak continues, he might finally have a chance to live up to his third-round pedigree.
Oh also what a day for Demarvin Leal numerous plays today where the play was whistled over early due to him being in the backfield and blowing the play up. pic.twitter.com/JGw7lfrSsI
— Baku 🐧 (@Mazursky8895) July 25, 2024
All things said DeMarvin Leal is having himself a good camp. Growing with consistency. That’s what they needed from him.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2024
It’s worth noting that the new kickoff format appears to result in more defensive linemen taking snaps on kick returns, which could be something to keep an eye on during the preseason. It’s also good news for defensive line hopefuls who can distinguish themselves on special teams.
Dean Lowry, who might play a significant role on the Steelers’ defense this season, has started camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list following a torn pec late last season. He has been spotted at practice jogging and doing some solo drills, which is a promising indication. Montravius Adams appears to be having a strong camp, as does Willington Previlon.
Inside linebackers
Currently on roster: Patrick Queen, Elandon Roberts, Payton Wilson, Tyler Matakevich, Mark Robinson, Tyler Murray, Cole Holcomb (PUP)
This group may have the most upbeat attitude thus far in training camp. Elandon Roberts and Patrick Queen have long been considered to be a formidable tandem at inside linebacker, and the latter has certainly looked the part of a big-money free agent signing.
That Patrick Queen guy is pretty good huh? pic.twitter.com/F1GMzvM6kT
— Baku 🐧 (@Mazursky8895) August 1, 2024
Queen has recently missed a few practices due to injuries, but no one seems concerned. He was injured following a physical Friday Night Lights session, and the Steelers appear to be taking every care this offseason (just look at Russell Wilson).
Rookie Payton Wilson has probably been a bigger star, stunning everyone with his hard ethic and incredible athleticism. If his previous health troubles do not resurface, he appears to be one of the draft’s best values. The prevalent opinion is that he will find a way to return to the starting lineup sooner rather than later.
Had to double check and make sure that wasn’t TJ Watt.
Nope it’s rookie Payton Wilson with an insane burst got a what would had been hit stick sack. pic.twitter.com/HCt8d9fJ9X
— Baku 🐧 (@Mazursky8895) July 25, 2024
Despite signing Tyler Matakevich and not having the strongest camp, Mark Robinson’s roster chances improve with each day Cole Holcomb is on the PUP list.
According to recent reports, Holcomb is a long way from seeing the field. The Steelers just modified his contract, which is also worth considering.
#Steelers added $3.1 million in 2024 split and base guarantees for Cole Holcomb with renegotiation, in addition to $4.92 million total guaranteed from 2023 contract
— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) August 2, 2024
Tyler Murray has drawn some buzz in the practice squad conversation recently.
Outside linebackers
Currently on roster: T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig, Markus Golden, Jeremiah Moon, Jacoby Windmon, Julius Welschof, Kyron Johnson, David Perales (IR)
Similar to Daniels and Seumalo, little has been said about Alex Highsmith this camp. It’s not a cause for concern, and Highsmith has still had his share of highlights.
T.J. Watt continues to blow plays up. It was a big surprise.
Nick Herbig appears to be developing into a terrifying OLB3. Following an injury that placed David Perales on injured reserve, the Steelers reinforced their depth by signing Markus Golden, who had a fantastic day in his first full session back.
Markus Golden is balling lol. He’s destroyed everyone he’s gone up against.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 3, 2024
Whoever else you say is a winner today, not sure there’s been a bigger one than Markus Golden. Dominated every period tonight.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 3, 2024
Despite his roster odds taking a hit with Golden’s acquisition, Jeremiah Moon has had a good camp and remains a guy to monitor. He, like Kyron Johnson, has recently contended with an injury. Julius Welschof, an international player, could be a name to watch in the Redman Award competition. He’s had a couple good days.
The Steelers’ pass-rushing depth is a significant strength in 2024. The squad seemed to have understood this as well, since they experimented with a three-OLB package during practice.
Secondary
Currently on roster: Joey Porter Jr., Donte Jackson, Cam Sutton, DeShon Elliott, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Damontae Kazee, Beanie Bishop, Thomas Graham Jr., Kalon Barnes, Grayland Arnold, Ryan Watts, Cory Trice Jr., Darius Rush, Anthony Averett, Kyler McMichael, Miles Killebrew, Nathan Meadors
Joey Porter Jr. has had a successful camp by all accounts. He appears to be on course to stay as the Steelers’ CB1 this season, and his fights with George Pickens remain highly entertaining.

Donte Jackson hasn’t had the best summer, but he appears to be doing his thing to keep the Diontae Johnson deal manageable for the Steelers. He was one of the most impressive players during the first week of camp, and there are no questions that he will be able to hold his own as CB2 in 2024.
In the slot… well, that’s Beanie Bishop Jr.’s world, and we’re just living in it. The West Virginia UDFA has received high praise, hogging the majority of the first-team nickel snaps and even holding his own against George Pickens despite being 5’9. He has also given possibly the most notable defensive highlight of training camp this year.

— Jack Sperry (@jack_sperry) August 3, 2024
There has been some position switching. DeShon Elliott has had snaps in the slot. Cam Sutton has primarily played safety. Ryan Watts (likely a safety in the NFL) and Cory Trice Jr. have played dimebacker. With Damontae Kazee in the picture, the Steelers’ defensive playbook includes three-safety looks. Versatility appears to be the aim.
Trice has had a quiet summer and appears to be falling behind Darius Rush on the depth chart, however the preseason will begin to expose the true order. Grayland Arnold has apparently had several good days in camp and is a potential replacement for Bishop in the spot. Arnold has also lately missed some time due to an unidentified injury, but he appears to be fit again. With a successful second week, Watts’ odds of making the 53-man roster improved.
Minkah Fitzpatrick has gotten little attention at training camp, but that’s probably a good thing. He has missed some time but does not appear concerned.

— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) August 3, 2024
You’ll hear a lot about all of the names above getting beat repeatedly at camp, but keep in mind that the majority of the workouts and scrimmages favor the offense. There is nothing unusual about the situation right now.
Specialists
Currently on roster: K Chris Boswell, Matthew Wright; P Cameron Johnston; LS Christian Kuntz
Chris Boswell has apparently had some bad days, but the kicker is one of the most accurate in NFL history, so there is no cause to be concerned just yet. Backup Matthew Wright is a name to remember at camp, as he has previously served as a good backup option in the event that Boswell is injured.
Cameron Johnston, the new punter, has allegedly had a wonderful camp. The Steelers appear to have finally found a reliable punter.
New punter Cameron Johnston getting literal applause for his boots in practice. Fans hoping to see better punting this year and I think they'll get it. #Steelers
— Alex Kozora (@Alex_Kozora) August 3, 2024
The gunner positional battle will be a major factor in roster battles in the secondary and at wide receiver. Even running back Jonathan Ward is in the mix.
Rookie defensive lineman Logan Lee appears to be the team’s emergency long snapper. Do with that information as you will.
And of course, we can’t forget about kickoffs. For one, expect the Steelers to be one of many teams experimenting with weird strategies to try to make the most out of the new rules. On the more negative side of things, Steelers beat writer Mark Kaboly could hardly contain his disgust over the new rules and the Steelers’ level of preparedness towards them, calling it a “disaster waiting to happen.” We’ll find out if that’s the case on August 9.
OC Arthur Smith
This will be a bonus category, as Smith has been probably the most essential player to watch during Steelers training camp this season. The Steelers’ offensive coordinator position has struggled in recent seasons, but Smith has a chance to turn things around. His Atlanta resume was unimpressive, but his previous position in Tennessee (as a coordinator) was successful.
So far, reports from Pittsburgh have been consistent with expectations. Aside from the enhanced accountability indicated previously, Smith has been praised for taking a more professional attitude than Matt Canada brought to the squad.
And then there’s the schematics: Smith’s offense has shifted its passing game concentration to the middle of the field, particularly for tight ends. He also appears to be executing his hallmark zone run scheme. In 2024, the Steelers’ offense is expected to revolve around a powerful run game and deep play-action shots.
2. It’s on new OC Arthur Smith to figure out when/how to periodically take advantage of Fields’ talents. The rest of the offense figures to rely heavily on play-action, multi-tight ends and/or two-running backs sets, and work the middle. If I played fantasy, I’d draft Freiermuth.
— Mike Prisuta (@DVEMike) July 29, 2024
Positive training camp reports, like with any position, but notably coaching, will be meaningless in comparison to the actual results when games are played. Fortunately, the results aren’t too far away.
