Following his dramatic victory over Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday, Novak Djokovic promised to compete for additional Olympic gold in 2028. The 37-year-old finally won the one major trophy that had escaped him during his great career, defeating the Spaniard 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) in a thrilling match at Roland Garros.
Djokovic’s victory made him only the sixth player to win all four Grand Slams and an Olympic singles gold, joining Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi, and Steffi Graf.
The Serbian was reduced to tears afterwards, having previously declared that winning in Paris this summer was his main goal for 2024.
But he’s now refuted the assumption that the competition marked his final performance at a summer Games. The 24-time Grand Slam winner will be 41 by the time the next edition takes place in Los Angeles, and he is already eyeing a spot on his country’s team for America.
“I still want to play in Los Angeles,” he declared after defeating Alcaraz. “I enjoy playing for my country and the Olympic Games particularly and Davis Cup, being part of the team.”
Djokovic also stated that obtaining the coveted gold medal was one of his most significant accomplishments. “Now at the age of 37 and facing a 21-year-old who is probably the best player in the world right now, winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back, I can say that this is probably the biggest sporting success I have ever had,” according to him.
Since his victory, there has been no shortage of accolades for the tennis legend. Serbian footballer Dusan Vlahovic attended the final and later praised his compatriot’s triumph, arguing that it confirmed his standing as the greatest player of all time.
“An incredible thing, I’m very glad that I was a part of history, and I congratulate Novak,” added the Juventus striker. “I wish him luck, and I appreciate him for delivering this gold to Serbia.
“He is our best athlete, as well as one of history’s finest athletes. I’m glad I was a part of history, and that he won what he missed. However, as I previously stated, let the entire world declare him the greatest of all time.
