The New England Patriots are reportedly prepared to give 49ers Star a top-5 WR contract
The New England Patriots are reportedly ready to make star wideout Brandon Aiyuk their new franchise receiver, despite suspicions that the San Francisco 49ers are making him available for trade.
During an appearance on SportsCenter on Tuesday, ESPN’s Mike Reiss stated that the Patriots are “willing to make Aiyuk one of the top five highest-paid receivers in average per year.”
Reiss highlighted that the Patriots’ aggressive mindset dates back to February, when new executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf declared that he intended to “weaponize the offense.” Earlier this offseason, New England pursued standout receiver Calvin Ridley and was willing to “spend big” for him, but he ultimately signed with the Tennessee Titans.
Despite speculations that the Patriots are pursuing Ridley, the franchise has not spoken on the matter. While speaking with media on Tuesday, first-year head coach Jerod Mayo said, “I know everything you want to know. One thing I learned from Bill [Belichick]: I don’t discuss guys from other clubs.”
Aiyuk has stated unequivocally that he wants a raise from his $14.1 million fifth-year option for the 2024 season. He has attended training camp but has yet to practice.
The 26-year-old is coming off a standout 2023 season in which he amassed a career-high 1,342 receiving yards on 75 catches and seven touchdowns while earning second-team All-Pro accolades.
If New England is able to obtain Aiyuk, he would be a game-changing addition to a franchise that is beginning a new era under Mayo and rookie quarterback Drake Maye, the third overall pick in this year’s draft.
