Yankees are willing to Trade ‘veteran pitcher’ In Blockbuster deal
It seems like New York tried to get a major trade deadline deal done.
The New York Yankees were exceedingly active ahead of the 2024 Major League Baseball trade deadline, but it appears that they could have made more deals.
New York entered the deadline with several roster gaps. The Yankees wanted to enhance their offense, particularly in the infield, get some bullpen help, and perhaps even a starting pitcher. Jazz Chisholm Jr. joined the New York Mets as an infielder, and relievers were added.
The Yankees were unable to complete a trade for a starting pitcher, but it does not appear that this was due to a lack of effort. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports, New York was eager to trade “prized” top prospect Spencer Jones but was unable to reach an agreement.
“The Yankees were willing to include prized outfield prospect Spencer Jones for pitching help at the deadline, several teams said, but balked because of Jones’ struggles this year,” Nightengale said.
Jones is now New York’s No. 2 prospect, trailing only outfielder Jasson Domínguez. He’s only appeared in 98 games this season and is slashing.246/.328/.419, 14 home homers, 63 RBIs. He’s also hit 20 doubles and swiped 21 bases.
There’s a lot to admire about Jones, but it’s intriguing that New York was willing to trade him. The Yankees have a legitimate opportunity to win the World Series this season, and acquiring another star pitcher could have made it simpler.
The Yankees were unable to close a deal, but this was not due to a lack of effort.
