On Monday, Mayo stated that they have not decided who will line up in their season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“We still don’t know right now,” Mayo stated in a team transcript. “We have another preseason game [against the Washington Commanders] and a week after that. When I find out, I’ll let you know.”

Mayo did reveal how impressed he has been with 21-year-old Maye.

“This guy comes in early, leaves late,” Mayo explained. “Every day, he is one of those kind of individuals, and he has done an excellent job.

“I would also say that the coaches did a wonderful job of meeting with him one-on-one to ensure that he is comfortable with his team’s play. He’s definitely getting better.

Despite the lack of an announcement, Brissett was assumed to be the starting quarterback, and the 31-year-old says he still believes so.

“I still treat myself as if I am the starter,” Brissett admitted.

He also stated that he will not get carried away if the support for Maye to start became louder as the season progressed.

“I can’t worry about that,” Brissett added. “I just go out there and do my job and I’ve been in this league long enough to know, a lot of crazy things have happened in my career and I wouldn’t be shocked by anything but at the same time I’m enjoying this process, putting my best foot forward and letting the chips fall where they may.”
