The Boston Red Sox made a big comeback Wednesday night, defeating the Houston Astros, but things weren’t going well for the team.
After losing the first two games of a four-game series against the Houston Astros, Boston rallied for a stunning 7-5 extra-inning victory Thursday night. While the win is obviously nice, star closer Kenley Jansen was forced to exit the game after only 1/3 of an inning. According to Christopher Smith of MassLive.com, Jansen departed the game due to right hamstring soreness but is unlikely to miss any time.
“The Red Sox announced Kenley Jansen left the game with right hamstring tightness,” according to Smith. “‘Just tight,'” manager Alex Cora remarked in his postgame press conference. ‘We will see where we are tomorrow and how he feels. “Hopefully, he’s prepared for Friday.”
If Jansen were to miss any time, it would be a significant blow to Boston’s much-improved bullpen. This season, the 35-year-old has excelled as Boston’s closer. Jansen has a 2.81 ERA and has converted 29 of his 31 save attempts. In 2022, Boston’s bullpen was one of the weakest in MLB. The Red Sox bullpen has improved dramatically this season, and Jansen is one of, if not the primary reason.
Cora indicated Friday as a possibility for Jansen, so perhaps he will have another shot to throw. The Red Sox are now four games out of an American League Wild Card place and will need all hands on deck if they are to make a push.
