BIG NEWS: Jerod Mayo reveals rationale for Starting Jacoby Brissett
On Thursday, the New England Patriots christened their veteran quarterback “QB1.”
The New England Patriots’ long-running preseason QB1 dispute has finally been resolved, with Jerod Mayo announcing on Thursday morning that Jacoby Brissett will be the team’s starting quarterback for the foreseeable future.

Brissett, the Patriots’ seasoned offseason free agent signing from this past spring, effectively pushes out top-three overall pick Drake Maye for the starting job, despite the rookie’s excellent preseason performance. Mayo and New England appear to be adopting a long-term approach to developing their first-year quarterbacks, with the more experienced person in the organization leading the charge.
Coach Mayo explained his choice to choose Brissett as the Patriots’ starting quarterback:
“There are numerous elements that contributed to this decision. The hardest thing, in my opinion, is thinking in both the short and long term. As an organization, however, we believe Jacoby [Brissett] gives us the best chance to win right now.”

While generating some eye-catching displays during the preseason, Maye appeared to be destined for the QB2 spot from the start of the season.
Brissett has received the most first-team reps during practice, has started all of the team’s preseason games, and was previously mentioned as the starting quarterback by Mayo during summer minicamps. Maye made some good progress early on, but it appears that the intention was to let him learn behind the vet all along.
Brissett will make his first start for New England since 2016 in just over a week, when the Patriots face Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals on September 8th at 1 PM ET.
