Stewart, who now races in the NHRA, explains why he didn’t watch last week’s Coke Zero Sugar 400.
Even before a slew of major incidents at last weekend’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Florida’s legendary Daytona International Speedway, some involving Stewart-Haas Racing drivers, team owner Tony Stewart had distanced himself from the NASCAR Cup Series pandemonium.
He admitted he didn’t see the telecast.
“I did not even watch. I’ll be honest. It’s incredibly difficult to watch. It’s knowing that you have incredibly talented individuals that build really wonderful race cars and then they go down there and get completely demolished. So that’s not something I want to witness,” Stewart stated during this weekend’s NHRA Toyota U.S Nationals in Indianapolis.
Instead, he chose to concentrate on this weekend’s NHRA event. The NHRA Rookie of the Year favorite is one of 20 Top Fuel drivers competing for a spot in the 16-car grid for the 70th Labor Day Classic at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.
After a season-high five qualifying sessions until Sunday, Columbus, Ind. native Stewart will look for his first professional drag-racing victory in Sunday’s eliminations at his hometown track.
