Sumter, SC – Authorities have arrested and charged 80-year-old Reuben Arthur Leonard in connection with two separate homicides—one occurring in Sumter County and the other within the City of Sumter.
According to law enforcement officials, Leonard is facing two counts of murder stemming from incidents that are believed to be unrelated but share striking similarities. Investigators from both the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and the Sumter Police Department have been working in coordination after connecting evidence that led to Leonard’s arrest.
The first incident, under the jurisdiction of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, reportedly took place earlier this month. Deputies responded to a call regarding a deceased individual at a private residence. The victim, whose identity has not yet been released pending family notification, was found with fatal injuries. Initial investigations raised suspicions of foul play, prompting a deeper probe.
Shortly thereafter, a second body was discovered within the City of Sumter. Officers from the Sumter Police Department responded to the scene, where they uncovered additional evidence linking Leonard to the crime.
Following forensic analysis and witness interviews, authorities were able to establish probable cause and formally charge Leonard with both murders. He was taken into custody without incident and is currently being held at the Sumter County Detention Center.
Officials have not yet disclosed a possible motive, but they have confirmed that Leonard was known to both victims. The nature of those relationships, however, has not been publicly detailed.
“This is a tragic and deeply disturbing case,” said a spokesperson from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. “Our teams have been working tirelessly to ensure justice is served for the victims and their families.”
Leonard is expected to appear in court later this week for a bond hearing. The investigations remain ongoing, and authorities have urged anyone with additional information to come forward.
