Rangers’ decision to bring in striker Kevin Kelsy from Portland Timbers is a relatively low-risk move with the possibility of delivering an exceptionally high return.
That is the view of former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who feels the 22-year-old could be on the verge of making significant progress over the next few years.
Rangers paid a fee in the region of £9.5million to secure the Venezuela international, who scored nine goals across 20 appearances in the MLS this season.
Borson believes Kelsy could enable the Glasgow giants to “treble their money” in the years ahead, given the significant value placed on strikers in the modern transfer market.
The youngster came off the bench to make his debut during Rangers’ 1-0 victory over Motherwell on Saturday, but he is expected to establish himself as the leading forward at Ibrox.

Borson feels the decision to recruit the attacker carries considerable “upside” and does not represent a major financial gamble.
Stefan Borson outlines ‘worst-case’ Kevin Kelsy scenario
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson stressed that even if Kelsy struggles to make an impact in the Scottish Premiership, Rangers could still recover a substantial portion of their investment.
“Well, it’s not a huge amount of money, and clearly if it works, it’s a striker, and we know that there’s a huge shortage of strikers,” he said.
“People are going to look at the SPL; he’s going to get noticed. He’s 22. It’s a treble-your-money type of deal if it works.
“Measuring it in terms of risk vs reward, you’d probably look at it and go well, what’s the maximum downside here if it fails? Presumably, one of the American teams would buy him back for at least £7m.
“You’ve got probably really limited downside, given his age, and your upside could be pretty significant and pretty fast if he works.
“I think it’s the sort of deal that makes a lot of sense. Whether he’s up to the standard is obviously very, very difficult to know.”
49ers’ Rangers takeover position revealed after confirmed news
Former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider earlier this week that Rangers’ 49ers ownership is unlikely to consider any proposals to sell the club in the years ahead.
The development comes after businessman Neil Lal recently stated that purchasing the Ibrox club is among his long-term objectives, while he is also working towards a potential takeover of Leicester City.
However, Wyness believes Lal does not have the financial resources required to make an approach for the Gers, while he also expects the current owners to have no desire to surrender control.
He believes the 49ers are committed to a long-term project in Govan, and that it would require a major change in circumstances for their position to alter anytime soon.
