Dangerous heat returns across Utah, record highs possible Tuesday

Happy Monday, Utah! The heat wave continues, with temperatures reaching triple digits across much of the state.

Heat alerts are in effect until Tuesday night due to a strong ridge of high pressure to the south. Temperatures will rise above average statewide, with most regions five to eight degrees above normal today afternoon and up to ten degrees above normal in northern Utah on Tuesday.

Building heat through Tuesday might set a new record high in Salt Lake City, with a high of 103 degrees expected – the current record is 102 degrees from 2019.

Monsoonal moisture will also persist, with daily possibilities for showers and thunderstorms in southern and central/eastern Utah.

In susceptible regions such as slot canyons, dry washes, recent burn scars, and steep terrain, the potential of heavy rain and flash flooding will increase each afternoon and evening.

The weather pattern remains largely intact until midweek, with continuous high pressure over our region.

Hot temperatures will persist through Wednesday, and monsoonal moisture will continue to hit southern Utah.

This indicates that the chances of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, particularly over higher terrain, will increase later in the week. If you’re planning an outdoor adventure in central or southern Utah, be mindful of the possibility of heavy rain and flash flooding in slot canyons, dry washes, or steep places.

By the end of the week, the ridge is predicted to diminish, bringing temperatures closer to seasonal averages. Stay tuned!
