JUST IN: Jerod Mayo offers concerning update on Patriots key player
Drake Maye, the New England Patriots’ rookie quarterback, might have a huge week.
Maye had only seven snaps in the team’s preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers. With the Eagles visiting Foxboro this week for joint practice and Week 2 of the preseason, head coach Jerod Mayo says Maye has some important work ahead.
When can we expect Drake Maye to play more?
Mayo was questioned about Maye’s usage after Sunday’s practice in front of season ticket holders.
He stated that this week will be a big one for the squad, particularly the quarterbacks. New England will hold a joint practice with the Eagles on Tuesday before playing Philadelphia in Week 2 of the preseason on Thursday.
“Yeah, for all of the quarterbacks, this is a big week for them to show their improvement. Drake will play more this week, for sure,” Mayo added. “But don’t forget, whenever you practice against a team, they’ll get a lot of excellent repetitions against someone else, and we’ll see how they play in a game. That includes all positions, though.”
Patriots coaches impressed by Drake Maye
Before practice, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt told the supporters that Maye had been “impressive” this offseason.
“He’s been impressive and completed everything we requested of him. “He studies really hard and puts in the work,” Van Pelt remarked, as reported by ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “We’ve improved his footwork, and the most impressive thing I’ve seen from him is his ability to process rapidly. He can quickly move from the first to the third reading. He sees the field really well.”
Mayo was questioned about his relationship with Van Pelt, who is in his first year as the team’s offensive coordinator.
“Yes, our relationship has been excellent. He is the offense’s head coach, and as you know, we talk about these things all the time, and occasionally things change,” Mayo said. “People ask, ‘Why didn’t Drake play this or that much?’ We had a plan, and we have one for this week too.”
