The Boston Red Sox will need their lineup to bear down, since one of their sluggers will be out of commission for longer than expected.

The Boston Red Sox expected to get a right-handed hitter back in the lineup this week, but an extended hospital stay has complicated matters.O’Neill was eligible to return to the lineup on Wednesday, but he will be out for at least a few days.According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, O’Neill spent four days in the hospital receiving treatment for his infection, which was later determined to be worse than previously stated.

“Tyler O’Neill said he got discharged from MGH yesterday after 4 days in the hospital having his leg infection treated,” Speier told me. “He started baseball activities yesterday. He will travel with the team and hopes to be activated without requiring a minor league rehab stint. The mere hint of a probable minor league rehab stay is disappointing news for the Red Sox, who were expecting O’Neill to return to the lineup ahead of Boston’s crucial series against the Baltimore Orioles.
