BREAKING: Justin Fields opens up about Pittsburgh Steelers QB Battle
The Steelers quarterback understands what he needs to accomplish to win the starting quarterback position.
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense is far from complete at this point in the preseason. Their first units have failed to produce a touchdown in two preseason games, and the team is getting closer to its Week 1 meeting against the Atlanta Falcons. Among the offensive woes is a competition for the starting quarterback position, which Justin Fields hopes to win during the next two weeks.
Both Fields and Russell Wilson appeared in the team’s preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills. Russ played four series, accomplishing little offensively while absorbing multiple sacks. Fields did as well, but was able to string together some longer drives under the center. Neither player gained an advantage in the quarterback race, but that doesn’t mean Fields is uninformed of what he needs to do to win. Following the game, he spoke with reporters about the steps he needs to take to become the Steelers’ starting quarterback this season.
“I just wanted to show cleanliness,” he stated. “I want to put drives together and finish with points. I believe we had extended drives, converted some third downs, and, as previously stated, entered the red zone several times. But I think next game, we just need to finish with touchdowns and points.”
Points are undoubtedly the name of the game for whoever plays behind center for the Steelers. Fields’ legs and ability to extend plays were on display during the defeat to the Bills, with an improbable sack escape and ball completion that astonished everyone watching. Despite the impression, he couldn’t lead the team beyond field goals. Fields hopes to build on his great performance in the last preseason game by scoring a touchdown or two.
“If you don’t end a drive in points, none of it matters,” remarked the player. “So score touchdowns, I think that’s the biggest thing.”
The Steelers will play their last preseason game against the Detroit Lions. With the quarterback competition still up in the air, both Fields and Wilson may see some play. For Fields, this could be his last chance to prove he should be the starter in Pittsburgh in 2024, and he will be aiming to score some points during his chances.
