Former Patriots’ star makes major film debut in ‘The Forge’

Ben Watson, the Super Bowl XXXIX champion, was immensely popular during his week on the film set of The Forge in Albany, Georgia.

“We definitely shared some football stories,” Watson explained. “It’s always enjoyable to chat about (Tom) Brady and Drew Brees. “They are common topics.”

Considering the first-round pick in the 2004 NFL Draft spent seven years with the New England Patriots and four with the New Orleans Saints across a 15-year career, those were obvious discussion points during breaks on set.

“Everybody was delighted to have him there,” actress Priscilla Shirer, who plays the protagonist’s mother, said exclusively. “He’s very easy to work with and be around. I believe everyone appreciated that.”

Watson’s big-screen opportunity with movie legends like Shirer came as a surprise after he received an email.

After Watson and film executives exchanged notes, Kirsten, Watson’s wife and mother of their seven children, pushed him to pursue it.

“This is going to be a great experience,” she told me. “You need to go do this.”

Watson has never attended acting classes, yet his minor role in The Forge was a natural match. He portrays a football coach named Benjamin, and the film’s theme is consistent with Watson’s religious beliefs.

The film examines the role of mentorship, faith, and community in overcoming life’s problems for 19-year-old Isaiah Wright, a lost soul seeking guidance. The Forge, which delves into the power of discipleship and its significance in spiritual growth, will open in theaters nationwide on August 23.
