Former New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is expected to be traded again.
The New England Patriots parted ways with quarterback Mac Jones during the NFL offseason, moving him to the Jacksonville Jaguars. It was a difficult finish to a disastrous reign for both parties.
At one point, Jones appeared to be Tom Brady’s natural successor. He had flashes of being a franchise quarterback, but they never translated into consistency.
In the 2023 NFL season, Jones appeared in 11 games for the Patriots. He completed 64.9% of his pass attempts, totaling 2,120 yards, ten touchdowns, and twelve interceptions.
Clearly, his numbers were not moving in the correct direction. He appeared in 42 games for the Patriots over three years, completing 66.1 percent of his throws for 8,918 yards, 46 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions. Jones wasn’t horrible, but it was evident that he wasn’t the long-term solution for the organization.
Following his first preseason with the Jaguars, Jones has received another trade prediction.
Bleacher Report predicts that Jones will be traded again before the trade deadline.
“The 2023 season demonstrated the worth of a great backup quarterback. Several of the league’s best talents were out for extended periods of games. Those with a solid backup survived and won a few games. Those who didn’t learned the hard way that a good backup quarterback can make a big difference. It’s why Mac Jones may become a valuable trade asset if the appropriate team suffers a quarterback injury during the season.”
Even though his tenure with the Patriots did not go as planned, Jones has undeniable talent and potential.
If he can put everything together, he has a good chance of returning to the starting quarterback position. For New England, a change of scenery was necessary. That is not an indication that Jones lacks the talent to play in the NFL.
All of that said, it will be intriguing to see what the future holds for Jones. He still has plenty of time to get his career back on track, but there will be no starting job available in Jacksonville until Trevor Lawrence is injured.
