Andy Halliday believes VAR committed a major error by refusing to award St Mirren a penalty on a night when they suffered a dramatic late defeat to Rangers.

Kabia appeared to be fouled inside the area by Fernandez, although there were only limited appeals for a spot-kick from the St Mirren players. Halliday believes VAR official Steven McLean made a serious mistake by failing to instruct Robertson to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.

St Mirren endured sustained pressure from the hosts throughout a dominant first half before growing into the contest after the break, only to be denied by Bojan Miovski’s late winner for Rangers.

However, Halliday believes the Buddies should have been handed an opportunity to take the lead from 12 yards following Fernandez’s challenge on Kabia, which went without punishment.

“But when you see the replays, there is no doubt in my mind that it’s not Kabia who initiates contact here, it’s Fernandez. You can see that little buckle of the ankle to suggest where the contact comes. I forgive referees for not getting that in live scenarios but VAR has got to pick those scenarios up. For me, I think St Mirren should have had a penalty kick in that instance.”
