After Harry Wilson was brought in, many expected the club to continue pushing and secure the other two players.
However, that was not the case, as both Brandt and Charles eventually joined different clubs despite the strong interest from the 49ers. Brandt opted to move to Ajax and, after completing his transfer, revealed that he had been in discussions with the club for months before reaching his decision.
The situation surrounding Shea Charles, though, was very different.

Leeds United initially saw two bids rejected by Southampton.
As a result, the club prepared a third and final offer, which was also turned down. The 49ers chose to leave their final proposal on the table in the hope that Southampton would reconsider it later in the window, but that never happened.
Fulham eventually moved to sign the 22-year-old. Leeds managing director Robbie Evans spoke about the club’s pursuit of the midfielder.
”We had our overall squad-building goals, we had our financial parameters, and we had a view on where we could fit the player in terms of the sacrifices or compromises elsewhere that have to happen because of him.” he told The Athletic.
At some point, you hit a point where it felt like it’s not the right thing for us to do, and so you walk away from that. Again, that was more of a market opportunity. There weren’t a lot of players in midfield we felt had the right age, profile, and fit to go after.”
”When we didn’t get that one, it wasn’t an urgent need to go and sign a midfielder because our midfield is quite strong, actually. It was worth looking into, and we did, and then at some point it felt like it was no longer the right value for us, and the best move was to have the discipline to walk away.”
Leeds were right to hold their ground in the summer window
With Shea Charles and other deals the Whites refused to compromise on, it proved to be a very sensible decision by the club.
Leeds made their position clear regarding a potential move for Charles, while Southampton remained firm. The Saints eventually found a side prepared to meet their asking price and approved the transfer.
The Whites also maintained their position on deals involving Joel Piroe and Largie Ramazani.
Clubs were seeking more favourable terms to sign the pair, but the 49ers ultimately secured strong loan agreements that included obligations to buy.
Therefore, it is hardly a major setback that Leeds missed out on Charles, particularly given how effectively they handled the rest of their transfer business.
