“We were the better team” — Fabian Hurzeler has made a big Leeds claim after Brighton’s 1-1 draw… and his MOTD comments are turning heads

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has reacted to his side dropping points against Leeds United in a 1-1 stalemate at the Amex Stadium.

Leeds controlled much of the opening half on the road and could have extended their advantage after Jayden Bogle put them in front. However, those missed opportunities would prove costly after the interval.

Brighton gained momentum in the first half, and although the referee has faced criticism for failing to spot a foul on James Trafford in the build-up to Lukas Vuskovic’s equaliser, the leveller had been threatening.

Attacking midfielder Pascal Gross squandered a golden chance from close range that could have secured victory for Brighton, leaving the hosts to settle for a point.

The Brighton manager admitted that his side lacked consistency and intensity during the first half, with Leeds winning most of the duels and second balls.

He highlighted the improvement after the break, with Brighton creating enough opportunities to claim all three points by the final whistle.

Hurzeler acknowledged that his team could have made a stronger start to the campaign and, despite being unable to secure a win, believes there were encouraging aspects to take from the 1-1 draw.

He said on MOTD: “Today we had a lack of energy, a lack of intensity, but we showed another face in the second half and could have won the game.

“It has cost us energy to chase the game. We need to be at the highest level from the start and need to find solutions for that.

Every second phase, every second ball landed for a Leeds player. That’s what we changed in the second half, and we were a better team. We don’t need long to change a game. We had plenty of chances, but it’s all about fighting for the clean sheet and being better.

Our start to the season can be better, can be worse. There were positives today but also things to improve.

Leeds should be satisfied with the point

Daniel Farke admitted that his side failed to capitalise on several chances that could have put the contest beyond Brighton before the hosts found their equaliser.

Nevertheless, Leeds scored at Brighton for the first time in over a decade, while the Amex remains a difficult venue for visiting sides.

Leeds can be pleased to leave the south coast unbeaten, with five points secured from their opening three league matches.
