Cleveland Browns dismiss Freddie Kitchens as head coach

December 29 (UPI) — Following his one-season tenure as head coach, the Cleveland Browns announced on Sunday that Freddie Kitchens has been sacked.

The Browns finished with a 6-10 season and prolonged their 18-year playoff wait after falling to the Cincinnati Bengals 33-23 on Sunday.

“Freddie’s commitment and hard work during the previous season are greatly appreciated,” stated Browns general manager John Dorsey in a statement. “We believe a change is required because we are unsatisfied with our outcomes. Both as a man and as a football coach, Freddie excels. We want the best for him and his family.”

In January 2018, Kitchens, at 45, became a running backs coach with the Browns. After former head coach Hue Jackson was sacked in the middle of the previous season, he assumed the role of offensive coordinator.

Baker Mayfield, the rookie quarterback for the Browns, had a great season with Kitchens calling plays. With a 5-3 record, he completed 68.4% of his throws for 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Prior to the start of the current campaign, Dorsey elevated Kitchens to head coach due to his rapport with the Browns’ offence. Mayfield had a difficult sophomore year in Kitchens’ first full season as head coach, ending with 22 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
