From Nightmare to Unstoppable: Palace’s Forgotten Talent Set to Unleash After Miserable Spell

Crystal Palace loanee Matheus França is ready to begin his latest bid for a career revival.

The 22-year-old joined Alverca on loan after returning to Crystal Palace for pre-season. His switch to Portugal had already been confirmed, but he was forced to head back to London to handle personal matters.

He has now returned, resumed training and is available for selection. Portuguese newspaper Record reports on Tuesday that França took part in his first Alverca training session on Monday. He has also been registered with the league.

As a result, he could make his debut against Nacional this weekend.

Palace pre-season provided some optimism

Matheus França played in most of their pre-season friendlies and certainly did not look out of place. The Brazilian struck a hat-trick in 45 minutes against Swindon Town and also scored against Fulham.

That was not enough to alter the wider situation at Selhurst Park. França remains under contract with Palace until 2028, but another loan move always appeared to be the most probable outcome. He now has another opportunity in Portugal.

That follows a difficult period back in Brazil. As we reported extensively, Palace sent França to Vasco da Gama in August 2025, with the hope that regular game time could help him regain his rhythm and confidence.

Instead, he ended his spell there with 27 appearances, one goal, no assists and plenty of criticism. He started just four games and struggled to find his form.

Alverca could benefit from his arrival

There should at least be a chance for França to make an immediate impression at his new club. Alverca have endured a disappointing beginning to the league campaign. They are still searching for their first win after five matches and currently occupy third from bottom.

So this is hardly a move where França can simply fade into the background. Following a disastrous spell at Vasco and some positive moments during Palace’s pre-season, Portugal presents another opportunity for him to revive his career.

The opening move has now been made. He is back in training, registered and eligible to feature against Nacional next Saturday.
