A change to SCR rules (Squad Cost Ratio) meant Leeds were restricted to spending 85 per cent of their relevant revenue on squad costs, alongside other limitations.
Leeds’ managing director Robbie Evans has explained why the Whites believe this alteration held them back this summer.
Why Leeds feel ‘robbed’ by SCR change
Evans has disclosed that Leeds are negotiating with Daniel Farke over a fresh contract, but compares his situation with players such as Ethan Ampadu, indicating that patience is required.
The Whites have been negotiating with Farke for three months, and although no agreement has been reached, Marathe and Co. continued to invest heavily in their German head coach this summer.
However, according to Evans, the club would have been in a stronger financial position during this summer’s transfer window if they had remained under PSR rules.
He’s now spoken out after Leeds decided against switching to SCR last year.
Evans said, as quoted by The Athletic on Friday: “This year in particular, I would rather have had PSR because we were coming out of a three-year PSR window that included a very tough first year in the Championship.
“That year was going to roll off our three-year window this year, and that could have given us potentially a lot of freedom this summer. The move from PSR to SCR robbed us of that opportunity.”
However, Evans has acknowledged that SCR should prove more beneficial for Leeds in the long run, given that the new system favours clubs with a larger supporter base and strong commercial income.
Why SCR change could be affecting Daniel Farke contract talks
Leeds are aiming to tie Farke down to a new long-term contract before his current agreement expires at the end of the season.
The 49-year-old has suggested that he will not remain if the club is unable to meet his ambitions.
Following the transition to SCR, Evans has already indicated that Leeds will not have the same level of financial flexibility they would prefer in the short term.
This comes after Marathe’s two-year admission regarding Leeds’ spending limitations, which could be a factor in Farke’s considerations.
The head coach understands that Leeds will not be able to operate as they desire in the transfer market until the 2028-29 campaign at the earliest.
That said, there is currently no certainty regarding Farke’s future at Leeds.
