adminLeeds United forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be frustrated after failing to convert a couple of excellent opportunities as the Whites were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton on Saturday.
Calvert-Lewin will be “disappointed” that he didn’t score at least once for Leeds United against Brighton, according to Danny Murphy. Daniel Farke’s team were forced to settle for a point at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.
Jayden Bogle gave the Whites the lead inside the first 15 minutes, but Leeds squandered several chances to extend their advantage, with Calvert-Lewin guilty of missing two clear-cut opportunities.
His first chance came shortly before Bogle’s opener, when his close-range header was kept out by Bart Verbruggen. Ao Tanaka then collected the loose ball and rolled it across for Leeds right-back Bogle to finish from close range. Shortly afterwards, Calvert-Lewin raced through on goal, rounded Verbruggen and attempted to finish, only for his effort to be cleared off the line.
It is difficult to argue that Calvert-Lewin did not have enough chances to register his second goal for the Whites, and former Liverpool midfielder Murphy shared that view. “Calvert-Lewin, he’ll be disappointed,” he told BBC Match of the Day.
“These are really good chances that he’s had, a player of his quality. It gives you something to build on and when you don’t start taking your chances, you start fearing the worst.”
Leeds boss Daniel Farke conceded after the match that he believed his team had done enough to claim all three points. Brighton registered ten more attempts overall, but Leeds matched their total for shots on target and produced more big chances.
Farke said: “It’s a good point on the road. It’s a tough place to come so it’s a good point because Brighton are a good team. But we had a chances to win it. Normally if you miss so many chances in an away game, you come away with no points so I’m happy to have a point in our hands.
It’s a very good start for us – two difficult away games. It can always be better but overall it’s a good start and we are happy with it.”
Former Wolves manager Rob Edwards also backed Farke’s assessment that Leeds had enough opportunities to emerge victorious. “I agree with Daniel, actually, the way the game panned out, the chances they had, maybe they should have won,” Edwards said, on punditry duty.
The draw means Leeds remain unbeaten after their opening four matches in all competitions. They have recorded two victories, including a win over Nottingham Forest, alongside draws against Brentford and Brighton.
The Whites now have five points from a possible nine and sit in mid-table ahead of their Carabao Cup second-round away clash with Chelsea on Wednesday.
