Daniel Farke’s success could take a hit after putting pen to paper on a new deal at Leeds United in 2026-27.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that players’ performances often decline after being rewarded with new contracts.
With two wins and two draws from four games, the Whites currently sit third in the Premier League table, behind only Arsenal and Man City.
Leeds have a major opportunity to maintain their position heading into the international break, with a home fixture against Crystal Palace on Sunday, 20 September.
Football Insider understands that senior figures at Elland Road will meet with Farke during the international window, with the aim of agreeing fresh terms with him soon.
It is the least the German deserves, particularly after guiding Leeds to an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium, but the honeymoon period may not continue for much longer.
Daniel Farke is in ‘brilliant position’ to negotiate new deal
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson admitted that Farke does deserve the new deal, but suggested that Leeds’ form could suffer after the agreement is announced.
“It happens a lot with players where the performance in that year of negotiation is noticeably impressive,” he explained.
“They sign the new contract, and there’s a reversion to the mean. But clearly, given what’s happening on the pitch, he’s in brilliant position to negotiate, and that’s what he’s going to do.
“So they’re not going to want to rock the boat right now. I’m sure he’ll sign a new contract. They seem to have a bit of momentum, Leeds.
“I think if you look, there was a lot of confidence in that game against Newcastle. There just seems to be a bit of a buzz around how they’re playing and how they’re performing.
That’s amazing for a manager to be having a negotiation whilst that’s the the context and I suspect they want to get that signed pretty quickly on the basis of that, and so will Leeds, so everybody’s happy.
Can Leeds United maintain their form?
It has been an impressive campaign from the Whites so far, despite the 6-3 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup.
Leeds merit their current third-place position in the Premier League, although it is unlikely that Farke’s side can sustain this level of form throughout the entire season.
Opta has forecast Leeds to finish seventh in the Premier League, just ahead of Everton, with an expected total of 53 points in 2026-27.
The possibility of Champions League football arriving at Elland Road stands at 16.56 per cent, although stranger things have happened in England’s top flight.
